Artist bio

Layne Takahashi is a mixed media artist born in Tustin, California, and working in Brooklyn. Layne attended California College of the Arts Precollege, received her BA from UC Davis in 2022, and was part of the UCD Advanced Undergraduate Studio program. She attended the Royal Drawing School and Dumfries House as an artist in residence in fall 2023. Other recent residencies include the Midway Artist Residency in San Francisco, where she curated the group shows "An Accident, on Purpose" and "This Time, A Living Room Encounter" at San Francisco Gallery, and the Kunstraum Artist Residency in Brooklyn, which culminated in the exhibition "Within New Ground, Fragments Shimmer." Recent group exhibitions include “Haha, Amen” in San Francisco, "Good Work for Bad People," "Housewarming," and "Borders," all at Pushup Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Her current practice involves creating summations of the facets of her existence that spark curiosity. These facets include iconography from childhood or family history, often amplifying the essence of corporate America, embracing tackiness and calling class within art into question. The works embrace an oscillation between chaos, crude application, and finesse.
